A Survey on Surveys

Updated: Jul 30, 2024

This week, for one of my classes we were tasked with constructing a survey. This is one part of a project that we are conducting to help us look at different ways to answer a problem in our practice. For me, I decided that I wanted to focus on student engagement because I feel that that is an area in which I need to improve. I want to make what I am doing in the classroom to matter to my students. I don't want them to just provide me answers. I want my students to learn to effectively question things going on around them (Berger, 2024). My survey asks teachers to think about what they have done to address engagement. My survey went through a few iterations over the course of this week and that process is important. For me, I start my drafts with something that could classify as word vomit. I use that to get my thoughts out there as a foundation. From there I refine based on the ideas I want to focus on. I have created surveys for the MAET program before, so I had a base. Every survey comes with its own challenges. One design aspect that I made for this survey in particular was trying to space out multiple choice and text questions. If you have too may writing questions that leads to people not finishing the survey. This survey in particular I was struggling with how to capture different aspects of engagement. This led me to include a question discussing authentic learning experiences. I also contemplated removing a question about addressing students who are not engaged, but I received feedback that helped me structure that question in a better way. Overall, the experience has provided a survey I am proud of.
